Why We Love Classic Clarinet Manufacturing

From the 1940s through the 1990s, American, French, and German makers produced many of the durable, well-designed clarinets that remain outstanding players today. These instruments were made before the broad globalization of student-instrument manufacturing that accelerated from the late 1990s through the 2010s. Their proven Boehm-system designs remain familiar to today’s players, while their individual bore designs, materials, keywork, and tonal character provide a range of playing experiences that is increasingly hard to find in mass-market instruments.

For families, this can be a far better value than buying new. Quality new student and advancing-student clarinets commonly begin around $1,000 to $1,200 and can quickly rise to $1,500, $2,000, or more as materials and model level increase. At Kowal and Son, customers can purchase a carefully selected, professionally refurbished clarinet in like-new playing condition for a fraction of the cost of a comparable new instrument—without accepting the uncertainty of an unserviced used clarinet.

Kowal and Son selects instruments for their construction, potential, and playability—not merely a label or age—and restores each one to like-new performance. Every clarinet receives a complete professional restoration: polished keywork, new pads, new corks, mechanical attention where needed, and precise regulation for a secure seal, smooth action, and reliable response. The result is a clarinet ready to give a beginning student, marching musician, or advancing player many years of confident playing.
